James Suckling has announced his top 100 wines of 2019 and has included Errázuriz, Las Pizarras Pinot Noir 2018, amongst the top 10.
Awarded 99 points, it is the 2nd highest ranked Pinot Noir and sits amongst an illustrious list of wines from around the world, and the best ranked Chilean.
In 2019, Suckling and his team rated 25,000 wines from different vintages and discovered “more than 50 perfect wines among them”. In his latest report, the critic said that his year of “travelling and tasting” was “truly phenomenal for great wines”; “a Golden Age for winemaking”. Moreover, “many regions shone in quality”, notably “Argentina, Bordeaux, Napa Valley, Tuscany, Piedmont, Rioja, Port, Champagne and Chile”.
The grapes for Las Pizarras are sourced entirely from the Aconcagua Costa Estate from specific blocks that have a significant component of metamorphic rock including slate (pizarras, in Spanish). Given the extremes of this cool climate site, as well as the uniqueness of its soils and elevations, each small block of vines ripens at its own pace. Its proximity to the cool Pacific Ocean and its well-drained soils, with high level of slate and metamorphic rock, allow the Estate to produce Pinot Noir of exceptional complexity, depth, minerality and natural acidity.
The 2018 vintage will surely be remembered as a great one, with idyllic climatic conditions experienced throughout the season
Francisco Baettig, Viña Errázuriz Technical Director.
“With a Grand Cru philosophy, Las Pizarras Pinot Noir is a limited production of four specific lots within our estate in Aconcagua Costa, with a total of 6,7 hectares. The peculiar climate and soil present a wine that is characterised for being lineal, nervous, dry, mineral and well-structured. Therefore, the name of the range is directly related with the place and the terroir. The 2018 vintage will surely be remembered as a great one, with idyllic climatic conditions experienced throughout the season.”
